Susan Easton Black

Susan Easton Black joined the faculty of Brigham Young University in 1978 after receiving a Doctorate from BYU in Educational Psychology. She is currently a Professor of Church History and Doctrine and an Eliza R. Snow Fellow. She is a past Associate Dean of General Education and Honors and past Director of Church History in the Religious Studies Center.

Dr. Black was the recipient of the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award in 2000, the highest award given to a Professor on the BYU campus. She has authored, edited, and compiled over a hundred books, including a 50-volume compilation entitled Membership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1830–1848) and a seven-volume compilation entitled Annotated Records of Baptism for the Dead (1840–1848), Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois. One of her recent books is Joseph Smith: Praise to the Man.

Sister Black is married to Harvey B. Black, and they are the parents of eight children. She has served in many church callings and has demonstrated, through her faith and scholarship, her love of the Prophet Joseph Smith and the early Saints he knew and loved. She has shared her knowledge with audiences throughout the United States in Know Your Religion series, Education Weeks, and symposiums about the Prophet of the Restoration.
