Grant Underwood

Grant Underwood is a Professor of History at Brigham Young University and research historian at BYU's Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History. After earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in History from BYU, he received his Doctorate (PhD) from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1988.

He is author of The Millenarian World of Early Mormonism, published by the University of Illinois Press in 1993. Widely recognized for excellence, this book won the “Best Book” award from both the Mormon History Association and the John Whitmer Historical Association.

Brother Underwood is editor of Voyages of Faith: Explorations in Mormon Pacific History, and he recently helped complete a 900-page manuscript that will be the first volume of the Documents Series in the new Joseph Smith Papers. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Mormon Pacific Historical Society and was a Professor and Associate Professor of religion at BYU-Hawaii from 1992 to1999. While there, he was chosen “Teacher of the Year” several times.

Brother Underwood is also the author of numerous articles on Mormonism and has delivered papers at more than sixty scholarly conferences. He has served as a High Councilor and Bishop within the Church.

He is married to Sheree Jolley Underwood, and his family is his greatest joy. They are the parents of one son and six daughters, including two sets of twin girls.
