Monte S. Nyman

Israel has become almost a second home to us. We have resided there for two and a half years. We also lived there for ten months prior to that, making a total of over three years residency. We have also made several other short excursions during this time directing tours for BYU Travel Study. We have many friends and acquaintances there that we enjoy seeing as well as revisiting the various sacred sites. Our visits are always exciting and enjoyable.

Monte S. Nyman’s skill in directing study tours is motivated by his love for the scriptures. Brother Nyman stresses the importance of using the scriptures to understand Christ’s doctrine and apply it. He has made over twenty trips to the Holy Land, including directing BYU Semester Abroad programs. He spent two years at the Jerusalem Center teaching. He has also made numerous trips to Central America in connection with BYU. In his view, study tours should encourage a hunger for the scriptures and a fuller understanding of them.

His teaching career extends over thirty years. After teaching seminary for two years in Utah, he was called as the Director of the Edmonton, Alberta LDS Institute of Religion, where he stayed for four years until coming back to BYU to begin work on his Doctoral degree in Educational Administration.

While at BYU, he began teaching religion, both as an on-campus faculty member, and later as an instructor in Logan’s institute program. In 1965, he received his Ed.D. and was hired as a full-time BYU faculty member of religious education. He has served as Director of Book of Mormon Studies in BYU’s Religious Studies Center, and Associate Dean of Religious Education at BYU. He has also written numerous books and articles, and edited countless articles and manuals while working with the Church Correlation Committee.

Brother Nyman retired in 1996, but his talents and insight continue to touch the lives of those he comes in contact with. He and his wife, Mary Ann, make a good team. They personalize their tours and are concerned about each individual’s experience with the scriptures and the doctrines of the gospel.
