He focused his Doctoral research on autonomous education in Palestine and has presented his findings in a variety of forms in the Middle East.

Brother Van Dyke was invited to teach at the BYU Jerusalem Center in 2001–2002. He has lectured and published on many subjects related to the gospel and the Middle East. He is also the coauthor, with LaMar Berrett, of the very interesting book, Holy Lands: A History of the Latter-day Saints in the Middle East.

Brother Van Dyke was born and raised in Ogden, Utah. He served in the Missouri Independence Mission, where he visited important sites associated with early members of the Church and developed his love for Church history. When he returned from his mission, he enrolled at BYU.

In 1988 Brother Van Dyke boarded a plane bound for the Middle East to study at the Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies. The seating on the plane was arranged alphabetically, and a young woman named Katie Van Orden sat next to him. They became fast friends, and after their return to the United States, they were married in the Idaho Falls Temple.  Brother and Sister Van Dyke are the parents of seven children. They currently reside in Cedar Hills, Utah.
