LDS Travel Study – Lands of the Book of Mormon Tours

Our tours are not just a stop on a cruise! LDS Travel Study offers in-depth tours to the “Lands of the Book of Mormon.” Countries included in these itineraries are usually Belize, Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala. These are regions where the major civilizations dating to the time of the Book of Mormon, such as the Olmec and the Maya, flourished and then collapsed. This is also the most likely area where the Jaredites, Nephites, Mulekites, and Lamanites also flourished and later fell into ruin and destruction due to their wickedness.

Most individuals who speculate on Book of Mormon geography agree that Mesoamerica is the most likely area where the events recorded in the Book of Mormon took place.  They do this for the following reasons: (1) The only place in North and South America where there was a written language at the time of the Book of Mormon was in Mesoamerica. The Book of Mormon is a written language.  (2) The only place in North and South America where there was a calendar system existing at the time of the Book of Mormon was in Mesoamerica. The people of the Book of Mormon were meticulous in their accounting of time.  (3) The only place in North and South American where there are sufficient ruins dating to the time of the Book of Mormon that would accommodate the population sizes mentioned in the Book of Mormon is in Mesoamerica.  (4) The only place in North and South America where there are legends and history paralleling some of the events related in the Book of Mormon is in Mesoamerica.  (5)  The geography in Mesoamerica appears to have many similarities to that described in the Book of Mormon. 

South American tours focus more on the cultures, the people, and the beauty of the land rather than making any connections to the Book of Mormon. It is highly probable that people in the Book of Mormon spread in many different directions from the place of their original landing, and evidence of that may eventually appear in the South American cultures.
