August 8:  USA Munich

We will depart in the afternoon for our flight to Munich, Germany.

August 9:  Munich

After we arrive in Munich, we will board our coach and take a driving tour of this wonderful city---the largest in Bavaria.  We will stop and enjoy the sites of the Marienplatz and have free time for lunch.  In the afternoon we will visit the remarkable Alte Pinakoteke museum.  After that we will make the short drive to our mountain retreat where we will spend the next seven nights.  Upon arrival we will get settled in and have dinner at the hotel. (D)

August 10: Garmisch Partenkirchen

After a leisurely morning, we will travel today to the Alpine resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.  This city played host to the Winter Olympics in 1936 and is renowned for its charm and beauty.   We will enjoy free time for strolling and lunch and in the afternoon will travel to Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze, and take the gondola ride up to the top.  In the evening we will return to our resort for dinner. (B, D)

August 11: Salzburg

We will have an early breakfast today and then board the coach for the scenic drive into Salzburg—one of the most beautiful cities in the world and famous as the setting for the movie “The Sound of Music.”  Upon arrival we will go to the city center and visit Mozart’s birthplace and then have time to stroll the Getreidegasse and have free time for lunch and shopping.  In the afternoon we will visit some of the beautiful churches in the city center and go up to the fortress Hohensalzburg for a panoramic view of the city and surrounding countryside.  We will return to our resort for dinner. (B, D)

August 12: Innsbruck

After breakfast we will take the short trip to Innsbruck.  This city played host to two Winter Olympics.  We will take a short walking tour of the city, see the famous gold roof and then visit the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum.  After free time for shopping and lunch, we will visit the Imperial Palace.  In the afternoon we will return to our resort for free time and relaxation before dinner. (B, D)

August 13: Bavaria

Today we will visit the magical Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Castles.  These were the residences of King Ludwig II of Bavaria.  An eccentric recluse, Ludwig depleted the treasury of his country building extravagant castles and died in mysterious circumstances. Neuschwanstein seems unreal in its romantic Alpine setting and Linderhof is certainly the

most elaborate “hunting lodge” you will ever see!  In the afternoon we will visit the fabulous Rococo Weiskirche—it looks somewhat plain and simple on the outside, but just wait until you see the breathtaking interior. (B, D)

August 14: Bavaria: Oberammergau

We will travel early to Oberammergau, a delightful town that has been home to skilled wood carvers since the 12th century.  There are many interesting things to see in this quaint town. Scenes from the scriptures and from fairy tales are painted on the walls of buildings.  We will attend the marvelous Passion Play, which has been performed by the town’s inhabitants every ten years since 1634—when the thirty years war and the deadly bubonic plague killed almost half the population of Germany.  The people of Oberammergau vowed to produce this play each decade if they could be spared.  They were, and here we are 350 years later! (B,L,D)

August 15: Bavaria Munich USA

Bidding a fond farewell to Europe and the Alps, we will travel by coach to Munich and then board our flights back to the USA. (B)
